I signed up for a half-marathon today. That's right, 13.1 miles of running. I am not a runner, but I've lived in Austin now for 7 years and have seen many friends sign up, do it, and live to tell their tales. Most now have run other races, and some have even jumped up to the big leagues (yes, Patty S, I'm talking about you!). I say there is no better time. So, I printed out the training schedule, counted back 12 weeks from race day and realized I didn't have to start training until the first of November :-) I started today - ran 3 miles. Took me 36:30 minutes to do so, but I did it. This is my posting to the world, so I stay committed, and have someone to encourage me when I have the urge to quit. I'll keep you posted on progress. Now I have to go buy new shoes and some cute outfits :-)

That's awesome, Jessica! It's very good that you have more than 12 weeks to prepare. I found that Nov and Dec were hard months to train because of all of the holidays. I posted a post just like this one when I decided to run my half marathon. (http://milestogomommy.blogspot.com/2007/10/t-minus-121-days-and-counting.html) I wanted to tell the world so I would be accountable. It was also fun to keep track of my progress and look at how far I'd come. Good Luck! I know you'll be great.
Maybe if I start walking more now, then a slow jog, perhaps I can tag along with you in October.
I'll start right after our boat trip.
I'm proud of you for taking on this challenge...you'll do fine.
Dad
